Importing memos from Palm Desktop Software - Mac
If you use the Palm Desktop software on Mac you can export your existing memos as a Tab & Return file. With the help of the free MemosUploader desktop utility that file can then be uploaded to Google Docs and wirelessly imported into Memos. The categories you used in the Palm Desktop software will become Groups after being imported into Memos.
1) Export memos from your Palm Desktop software.
a) Launch your Palm Desktop software.
b) Select Memo List from the View menu.
c) In the top right corner of the Memo List, click the View popup button and select Desktop Memos.
d) Select Export... from the File menu.
e) Give your export file a name with an extension of '.tsv' and select a directory to save it in.
f) In the lower section: Module: select Memos; Items: select Desktop Memos - ####; Format: select Tab & Return.
g) Click the Columns... button. Uncheck all of the items except Title, Body & Category 1, then click OK.
h) Click the Export button.
2) Convert the export file and upload it to Google Docs.
a) If you do not have a Google Docs account, the first step is to get one. You can find more information and signup for your free account at Google.com.
b) Download MemosUploader from the Downloads page.
c) Install MemosUploader by double-clicking on the downloaded MemosUploader.dmg file (Safari will default to saving it in your Downloads folder). Drag the MemosUploader application icon to your Applications folder. Close & eject the MemosUploader.dmg file.
d) Launch MemosUploader from your Applications folder.
e) Click on the Google Docs username button, enter your Google Docs username & password and click OK.
f) Drag your Palm export file created in Step 1 to MemosUploader (or click to select it).
g) Click the Upload button to convert the Palm export file and upload it to Google Docs. If your export file exceeds the maximum file size allowed by Google Docs, MemosUploader will automatically divide it into multiple allowably-sized files. After a successful upload, MemosUploader will display a list of the uploaded filename(s). Notice that MemosUploader has changed the file extension to '.csv'.
h) Login to Google Docs and verify that you can see the uploaded file(s). The files will appear as spreadsheets.
3) Import into Memos.
a) In Memos, tap the Tools toolbar button at the bottom of the Memos list, then tap Import CSV File.
b) Tap the
CSV file item and select your export file from the list.
c) If you don't want these new memos imported into the top level of your list, tap the group item and select a group under which to create the new groups which will be created from the imported memos' categories. There's an add button in the top right hand corner if you'd like to create a new group for this purpose.
d) Tap the blue Import button to perform the import operation. If successful, you will see a column of green check marks in the status table.
e) If you have multiple files to import, you can tap CSV file again and select the next export file from the list, then press Import again.
